SPA Autumn Weekend Workshop - Orkney

Weekend Itinerary (from Andrew Appleby)
Please arrive at Fursbreck Pottery on the afternoon of Friday 26th if you can. Tim Palmer and I would like to pack his Iron Age kiln with all your pottery. There will be a final chance on Saturday morning if you can only make the late boats or planes.
We would appreciate unfired pottery to give us a better challenge.
Our Neolithic turf kiln will already be firing and will be being monitored scientifically by Dr. Stephen Harrison of OPPRA. (Orkney Prehistoric Pottery Research Associates.)
We can all meet up at The Merkister Hotel, by Harray Loch from 7.33pm. onwards that evening for a bar supper with local music to aid the digestion. Nearer the time we will need an idea of numbers for this, as with the other planned gatherings.
Saturday the 27th Sept.
Please arrive at the Pottery by 10.03 am. If you do have last minute pots for the kiln, then please have them at Fursbreck by 09. 07 am.
From around 10.39 Andrew Appleby will give a Prehistoric Coiling demonstration and instruction, showing a ‘lost’ prehistoric technique. If you can bring clay that you have dug yourself for this, so much the better! “This will be a revolutionary exercise.” Andrew assures us.
12.00 noon-ish to one one-ish there will be soup, rolls and a Barbie as well if the weather is kind.
By mid afternoon Tim Palmer’s kiln should be approaching temperature. This is when he and Lotte Glob will attempt to vitrify its outside. This will involve burning peats, bones, seaweed and wood. Lotte is interested in Scotland’s vitrified forts, so this is an ideal opportunity to EXPERIMENT with fire and have fun. Why not bring some figurines to vitrify in the conflagration?
There will be visits from ‘Guest Potters’ during the day.
The turf kiln will still be firing and Grooved Ware pots will be exposing themselves in the firmament.
5 pm-ish. Dispersal to accommodation and then Harray Stores at 7.06 pm. where Dr. Stephen Harrison (He will just be known as Stephen by then) will give an illustrated talk on OPPRA’s experiments into Neolithic Grooved Ware production. Then we will be served with a traditional Orkney dinner with a vegetarian option. Music with Orkney flair will commence during the meal and entertain us after woods.
Sunday 28th.
A slight lie in. Please be back at Fursbreck Pottery by 11.05 am. Malcolm Handol of All Five Senses will demonstrate Prehistoric Fire Making, and talk about ancient technologies.
We will have a ‘Potters Fire Ceremony’ in advance of unpacking the vitrified kiln. This will be a cliff-hanging experience. Hand’s clasped, and our prayers will be answered.
The Neolithic Turf kiln will still be smouldering, but most of the pottery will be visible and pieces can be removed too.
Lunch will be a Neolithic Barbie with some surprises and celebrations.
In the afternoon we are suggesting FREE TIME if you want. We have arranged an optional tour by All Five Senses. Or if you wish to chill out around the kilns and hang in at the pottery for more ancient coiling with Andrew, then you are welcome. David Holmes will be here from Shapinsay to do a Raku firing as well, so there will be plenty to grab one’s attention!
6.00 pm will see the last of the pots removed from the Turf Kiln on that day.
8.09 pm. An Orkney repast at the Stromness Hotel with story telling, drinking and revelry.
Monday 29th. Sept. If folk are not leaving on the morning boats or planes, then they are welcome to visit the pottery or just enjoy Orkney. Maybe you would like to make a bit of a holiday too here before or after the weekend.
It would be extremely handy if ones that do bring their car over, that they help with giving lifts to those without transport.
Contributions to Barbie Fare welcomed. Tea, Coffee and juice will be available all day.
WE ARE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS WEEKEND, SO DO JOIN IN.
Orkney is a stunning place and thoroughly memorable.

4.00p.m. onwards. Check in at Reception, find room and bring mug (or similar) for mug swap and any donations for raffle to Brearachan Room. Members work will be displayed in Lab A and materials and equipment for sale (clearly priced please) in the pack lunch area of main building. Work for the Kindrogan Award (theme Earth, Wind & Fire) to go upstairs outside the main coffee room.
6.00p.m. Welcome and introductions over a glass of wine in the coffee lounge

8.00p.m. Kindrogan Safety Talk followed by Slide Shows and Introductory talks by all demonstrators in the Brearachan Room, Steading East. Leading to discussion about a Ceramic Centre for Scotland.

'This is the only show where buyers do not have to ask you if you manufacture your goods in Scotland. All exhibitors at the show must be able to say that they design and manufacture at least 90% of their goods in Scotland.
For the first two shows we had buyers from all over Scotland, there was about a 50/50 split from the Highlands and Islands to the Central belt. The rest of the buyers who attended came from England, USA, Belgium, Germany and Holland. This year I am doing a huge push to attract more overseas buyers.
The buyers came from a huge mix of outlets from small craft/gift shops to large organisations such as The National Trust for Scotland.'

SPA Open Exhibition

We have accepted an offer of exhibition space at the Milton Gallery, Milton of Crathes on Deeside for 3 weeks in March. Dates are:
Sat Feb 28th – Thurs 19th March 2009
Delivery date: week leading up to 26th Feb
Preview Date: Sat 28th Feb 1.-3pm
Unsold work to be collected on or after Thurs 19th March.
This seems quite early in the year but hopefully if you get potting soon you will have some new work to display.
The gallery is large and bright with plenty of room for your work on plinths and hung on the walls. In a beautiful spot, beside the river Dee and Crathes Castle some 15 miles from Aberdeen it is a favourite place to visit at weekends. See:

Let me know a.s.a.p. if you would like a submission form. This is a great opportunity for every member of the SPA to show what they do. As yet, no size restriction but obviously for fairness larger and fewer, or smaller and more, pieces per artist.
The Gallery will arrange the work – there are plenty of plinths - and will show a representative display from all exhibitors.

Ceramics in the city

Ceramics in the City returns to the Geffrye with an exciting range of work by 48 selected ceramicists, a mix of both emerging and more well established talents. A wide variety of styles, techniques, colour and texture will be shown in domestic objects ranging from functional tableware and lamps, to purely aesthetic or quirky one-off pieces. Throughout the three-day event, visitors will have the opportunity not just to browse and buy, but also to talk to the ceramicists and watch free demonstrations.

'All Fired Up" 2010 SPA Spring Open Exhibition

Alloa Clay Station opens in March 2010 and is run by Glasgow trained ceramicist Fiona Byrne-Sutton. It is a new ceramic workshop with studio space. Glass designer and maker Elin Isaksson also has a studio and glass blowing furnace on site.
Set up with financial assistance from the Clackmannan-shire Alliance, the premises form part of a new complex of artists studios. The exhibition is an opportunity for you to inspect the new facilities and premises as well as supporting this exciting new venture.

“My passion lies in creating sculptural objects. I’m working with curves and lines to explore the concept of inner space and solidity. I find surfaces that are twisted or bent into smooth and strong curves fascinating – concave shifting to convex, inside to outside. Even though the forms are sometimes complex, they all embody a certain simplicity and strength.
My work is hand built by coiling technique, in stoneware.
I’m using coloured slips sprayed on the objects to create an even matt surface in one nuance.
Some are low-fired, and they are often double walled.” Merete Rasmussen
